Part 1 (하나 부)
Learning Korean, just like learning any language, is a process. You can't just start reading it like you know it. You have to start just like you did learning your own native language. Learn the alphabet then learn words and little by little you will start learning to form sentences and after years of practice (less for some than others) you will be speaking with native speakers like it is nothing. But first , of course, you have to practice speaking it and mess up sometimes. Do things wrong so you can learn why it's wrong so in the future you can do, or rather, say them correctly.
I know for myself personally it's been a tough but exciting journey. 하지만... However I have enjoyed it thus far. I have been learning Korean now for almost 2 years and although I feel like I could be better at it I won't put myself down because I have learned a lot more than I thought I could in the beginning. As I learn more I will begin to write short entries here in Korean. And I encourage my readers who can to help me. If I mess something up bad. Explain to me what I messed up and how to make it correct. I'm not confident enough in my abilities to do anything of the such now. But give me 6 months or so and I promise I will post some entries here in Korean. |
Well, I realize I haven't even started telling the story I came here to tell. So here it is.
I started listening to K-pop November of 2010 and became completely enthralled with it. The pop sounds, the beats, the fact that there were boy and girl groups, and most of all I started to love the language. I had no idea what they were saying but just hearing them made me want to. And sure, you can always just look up English translations but I wanted more. I wanted to be able to listen to a song for the first time without looking up anything and at least get the gist of what the artists were saying. So I decided to start learning Korean. First step was to learn the alphabet. Hangul (한글) wasn't exactly easy to learn but it wasn't hard either. I actually found a group of K-pop fans on a social networking site I was on and they had a language learning thread on their forum. One of them posted a chart that showed you how to learn the 한글. That chart made it so easy. I felt like that was where I really started learning. (So for everyone I posted the pic to the right of this column. ^_^ enjoy. By the way, this is going to be a multiple entry series. I could never post about my whole journey in one entry. Hope that pic helps you like it helped me. |
