Been dumped lately? This is the song you're looking for
As most of us know, recently Dara and Bom had an ‘urgent press conference’. Then we got 4 teasers for the new song ‘그리워해요’ aka ‘Missing You’. Listening to the teasers I actually had a sort of high expectation for the song even though I knew it would be a ballad. 2NE1 has had some great ballads. ‘아파’ aka ‘Hurt’ was so strong and gorgeous. I still feel like it’s one of their best. After watching the video for ‘Missing You’ I was left wanting more.
Not sure what it is with me and Kpop these days. Maybe I’m losing my mind. I used to get excited for comebacks and when I’d watch the video I’d love everything; the song, the choreography, the acting. But nowadays I feel like a lot of videos are letting the K-pop community down in one aspect or another. While the song was beautiful I felt like it was missing something. I’m not sure exactly what but can think of a couple things that might have made it better. Maybe some high or long notes or a slow rap. I’m happy 2NE1 left their comfort zone and did something different but isn’t it time they go back to what they do best. Does anyone else thirst for the ‘Can’t Nobody’ and ‘Follow Me’ Eras? Am I the only one that wants more ‘Clap Your Hands’ type songs? Does it seem to anyone else like K-pop is throwing itself off a cliff with the songs that are coming out nowadays? First Miss A with Hush and now 2NE1. I’m not sure if they are trying to make way for rookies or if they are really just out of good ideas. Don’t get me wrong. I like this song but I gave me this feeling like someone was taking me on a nice walk home through the snow and then they disappeared and I had to finish the walk myself. Basically I feel like this was not a finished song. Even looking at the English translation gave me the feeling this song was put together last minute and rushed into production then pushed out.
As for the video. I feel like that was worked on twice as hard as the song. It was beautiful. However it looked like it could have been for anything. Any kind of song. Speed up the video and change the song and it could have been some old fashioned 2NE1. But slow it down, tack it to a ballad and you get ‘Missing You’. As you can see I captured some of my favorite imagery from the video. That’s Thirty-Three screencaps from the video. I just couldn’t stop myself. Although I did catch some more deadpan faces. Come on K-pop, let her idols have some passion. Sometimes it looks corny but sometimes it turns out really well. I didn’t get to do a review of ‘Voodoo Doll’ by Vixx but that video had a pretty decent example of passion in the faces of the members and the girl. Anyone else tired fo the deadpan faces? I’m ready for some oldschool K-pop to come back and put some emotion back into the scene. Don’t know what else to say. The video was beautiful and well put together. And CL did one of the most tasteful nude scenes I’ve ever seen. I hope she wasn’t as cold as she appeared to be.
There wasn’t really a dance but there was that weird dude with the bling mask on. He danced around in an empty room. That part was a ‘WTF’ moment for me. I don’t see how that fit into the video nor do I feel like it was a great random add on. I feel like YG needed to fill up some time and someone threw that thing on and said “Hey, how about I dance with this mask on?” and YG said “Ok, we just have to fill up that 30secs. Do whatever you want” And then they edited it and POOF the video was done. There was a lot of imagery in the video but I feel like that was not part of it. And really there was no story to it. They were in random rooms doing random things a lot like in ‘Lonely’. Walking, sitting, standing, knocking things over. Just being girls, you know.
Other than all that the makeup and clothes were amazing and different and beautiful as usual. 2NE1 always likes to set a standard and they did it again. They look flawless and the can pull off any outift and apparently being naked too. Like I mentioned earlier that was a very tasteful nude scene. It looked innocent and was well done. I applaud CL for doing that. The big fur coats they wore looked cozy. I hope they got to keep those. I loved how their hair was all different colors too. Minzy had red, Dara had blonde, Bom had like a golden blonde and CL’s hair was black. Although CL had Black and White for that one shot in the big room with XXI on the floor. I loved their hair in this video. Although I do miss Bom’s green hair from ‘Hurt’. And all the tattoos on CL were wierd and interesting. I tried to get screencaps of all of them. I just want to mention the picture on the wall next to CL that goes blurry. It looks like an X-Ray of a pelvic bone, then when it goes fuzzy it looks like a face. Anyone else find that weird?
Anyways overall I was pleased with the video. It is something new and interesting. But I wish the song was different. I like it but I was hoping for something more compelling. I was hoping for something that would redeem 2NE1. Since ‘Falling In Love’ I’ve been wishing for a 2NE1 comeback that would put them back on the map. But they still seem to be falling apart. Don’t get me wrong, I love 2NE1 but ‘I Am The Best’ was the best song they’ve done in a long time. I really don’t want to see them go anywhere so I wish they’d go back to their roots and wow us again.
